http://www.metrorock.com/
69 Norman Street, Everett, MA
Note: The last sets of turns can be very tricky, so pay close attention.

When: Date & Time
Saturday March 24th.
Aim to arrive between 7 and 7:30 pm.
We can get into the gym at any time in the evening. We will be sharing the gym with the public until about 10pm, though there are not very many people on Saturday nights.
We will serve breakfast around 7:15, and head out by 8am

Who: Who can come
Everyone can come, and there should fun for all. There is no upper limit on the number of people who can join, and the minimum is so small there is no concern of not making is worth our while. (We pre-paid for 12.5 people)
But Please RSVP for planning purposes. Last minute additions are welcome, but please inform me by Friday 3/23.

What: What are the activities?
There will of course be rock climbing for parents and children alike
There will also be bouldering, which is climbing up a wall to a height that is safe if you jump or fall off.
We will be showing a G-rated movie at 10pm as well (Movie tbd – let me know if you have suggestions)

What do I need to bring for Rock Climbing:
The cost of the event includes harnesses and climbing shoes if you want to use them (You can climb in your own shoes if you wish). Parents and Adults will be belayers (The people holding the end of the rope), as no-one under 15 can belay.
Wear comfortable clothes and tight fitting shoes.
Bring a water bottle with your name on it!

How much does it cost?
For scouts who sold popcorn, the pack will cover the cost of the event. For all others, the cost is $45 per person. ($40 for Rock Gym and the extra $5 to cover food) You must bring the $45 per person with you on that night as cash or check the night of the event. While the gym does accept credit cards for individual climbers, we need to track and pay for the climbers as a group. All check payable to Pack 313.

What about dinner, breakfast and snacks?
The gym does allow us to bring food in, however, be mindful that everyone must wash their hands before and after climbing to both help keep the gym clean and free of greasy food as well as for hygiene. Think about how many people are climbing that wall.
We also suggest you bring a water bottle with your name on it.
Dinner: We will not be eating dinner as a group. So you can either eat dinner beforehand or bring food and eat there or order pizza to the gym.
Snacks: We will be providing snacks in evening of air-popped popcorn and drinks of water and a fruit-drink such as gatorade. You are free to bring your own snacks.
Breakfast: We will provide breakfast of cold cereal, fruit and oatmeal, with coffee, tea, milk and water to drink.

What about bathroom facilities.
There are 2 bathrooms, one for men and one for women. Each have 2-3 toilets, with 2 sinks and a small number of lockers. (Bring your own lock) While there is a shower in each bathroom, they are not always working, so don’t count on them. There is often pump soap, but only hand dryer, so consider your own towels.

How can I help:
We can use help in the following areas on the Saturday of the event:
– Be a belayer!  See below for instructions on how to do that. The more the better the experience for all. You cannot climb without a belayer.
– Staff the check in “area” on Saturday evening – collecting money and checking off names. (2-3 people)
– Help with setting up the movie area (Hanging a sheet, connecting the projector and computer up to play a DVD, connecting to the speakers, etc) (2-3 people)
– Snack help: Popping popcorn and setting up the snack area (2-3 people)
– Breakfast help: Making Coffee and Tea, Setting out breakfast, Making oatmeal (4-5 people)

We can also use the following equipment:
– Coffeemaker
– Electric teakettles
– Pitchers for water and drinks
– Crock pots for making oatmeal
– Hot air popcorn poppers
– Donated Paper products, such as cups, napkins, bowls, spoons. We will be making a Costco run, but any donated supplies are always appreciated.

I want to take the belay class, how do I learn to belay and get certified?
Metrorock will provide a belay class for up to 6 adults, but they’ve also said if we have a large group (and we will) they will teach more people. I need to schedule the class ahead of time for either this week or next, so contact me in the next few days if you are interested in learning to belay. I anticipate this will be an evening during the week. The class is about an hour to 1 1/2 hours. You can also take a class on the Saturday night of the event, but there will be an additional cost of $10 per person.

Where can I find the permission form?
Attached is the permission form for the overnight. Please fill this out for each person on the overnight and bring it with you. Please don’t wait until you get there, as the lines will be long enough as it is.

What do I need to bring for Overnight:
Sleeping Bag, Pillow, Personal Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, towel, comb…etc), PJ’s or Sweats for bed wear, Flashlight, Earplugs (There have been a few guests known to snore)
One of the nice things about sleeping at the rock gym is that the floor will be soft. There are some other areas that are closed off that may ne quieter, but they will have hard floors. But it will be “dusty” from all the chalk, so you may want to consider a sheet to go under your sleeping bag if you care about that.

Do I need to RSVP?
Yes Please. Getting an approximate set of numbers will be very helpful in terms of amount of food to purchase and for letting the Gym know.
